making room for you

talk to yourself

4/27/2017

This sample conversation can be used to talk to yourself to help examine your initial reactions to any circumstance. It will help you to take a look at what is behind your initial reactions.
This conversation can be used in a variety of situations to help you determine why you react the way you do. Examples: Arguments with someone in person or online, discriminatory response to someone you see, work argument, not helping someone in need, etc.

Thinking about the situation:
  • What did I see going on?
  • What did I hear people saying?
  • What did I hear myself saying?
  • What physical responses did I have to this situation?
  • What were the thoughts that were going through my head?
Thinking about your reactions:
  • How did I feel after reacting the way that I did?
  • How did I feel after seeing others’ reactions to what I said or did?
Thinking about the reasons why your reaction and the subsequent affects:
  • What have I witnessed in the past that prompts me to react in this fashion?
  • What is different about this situation than my past experiences that would require a new response?
  • What affect did my response have on this situation/relationship?
  • What would have been potential responses that I could have had, that would have been beneficial and not detrimental to the situation?
Thinking about what to do in the future:
  • What can I do to “interrupt” my immediate responses in the future to this situation in order to have a more thought driven reaction based on fact and not emotion?
  • How shall I insure that I provide more thoughtful, respectful responses in the future?
This process is called the ORID Method and can be used for any situation. To learn more about the ORID method, consider taking a Technology of Participation class.
